5 Things to Know Before Traveling to London

Tower Bridge, London

So, you’re traveling to London, England? Here are five things I wish I knew before heading there myself.

Looking for a great place to stay in London? Try SoHostel London for a budget-friendly option or Park Plaza Westminster Bridge for a more upscale experience.

  • The best way to get around London is by purchasing an Oyster card which can be used on the metro lines and buses.  The card itself costs £5 and you can pre-pay with any amount of credit you choose, depending on the length of your visit.  The card deposit and any pre-paid amount leftover when you leave (up to £10) is refundable.  Alternatively, you can always give the card to a friend or anyone you know who may be traveling to London.  In the city center (Zones 1 and 2) a ride with your Oyster card costs £2.40, whereas a single ride ticket costs £4.90.
  • London has three major airports (Gatwick, Heathrow, and Stansted) and several smaller ones serving domestic and European destinations.  Heathrow is connected to the city by the underground, which is the most cost-effective way to travel (you can buy your Oyster card at the airport).  Each airport also has trains that connect it to the city center, which is typically the fastest option.
  • If you plan to eat out during your trip, visit one of the city’s many markets to find great food for cheap.  My favorites are Borough Market and Camden Market, but there are smaller, lesser-known markets all over London.  Click here for my complete list of favorite places to eat.
  • Many of London’s museums are free to enter, not to mention incredible!  Take advantage of this!  A few good ones to check out include the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).
  • London’s best views, in my opinion, can be found near the Thames River.  Walk across one of the bridges, park yourself in a sky bar, or take a spin on the London Eye to take in the city and its mighty river in all their glory. The city’s tallest skyscraper, The Shard, contains a viewing platform, restaurants, and bars all offering stunning views…or hotel rooms if you really want to ball out.

Looking for a great place to stay in London?  My personal favorite is The Hoxton, Holborn.  Check out other hotels, compare prices, and read reviews here.

Pssst..London actually has five airports! You forgot Luton and City.

Woops, that was meant to say major airports. If I included all the airports serving London the list would be quite long! Corrected, thanks 🙂

Great list! 🙂 Also worth noting that as of a short while ago, London buses no longer accept cash payments, and you can’t buy tickets for them, so the only way to get around on buses here is using an Oyster card (or a contactless credit/debit card if you have one).

Gatwick Airport is not connected to London by the underground. It’s actually services by two main train lines. The Gatwick Express (30 mins from Gatwick to London Victoria) or Southern Rail – roughly 40-45 mins into London Bridge or London Victoria.

Oops, you are so right! Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll make the correction 🙂
