London is a great city, full of culture and history. Everything that defines British culture can be found in London. Here are five things you must do to get the full London and British experience.
Eat at a Celebrity Chef Restaurant
London is considered the gastronomic center of Europe and has restaurants from some of the best chefs in the world. One restaurant we would recommend is Le Gavroche, which is run by Michel Roux Jnr. The restaurant is arguably one of the most famous restaurants not only in Britain but the world. It was set up by the legendary Roux brothers Albert and Michel in 1967 and was the first restaurant in the UK to receive three Michelin Stars. The restaurant serves classical French haute cuisine and The Telegraph suggests everyone should experience their food.
Watch a Football Match
Football is ingrained in British culture. As the most popular sport in Britain, football is an integral part of so many people’s lives. In London alone, there are 13 professional teams, 5 of which are playing in the Premier League. According to Betfair, West Ham United will play their home games at the Olympic Stadium this season, so what better starting point than heading to one of the biggest venues in the whole of London? The Olympic Stadium was purpose built for London 2012 and has since been adapted into a football stadium. It holds 80,000 spectators but the capacity has been capped at 60,000 since construction took place to remove the athletics track.
Visit the Tate Modern
If you want to get a sense of how influential and dynamic the British art scene is then the Tate Modern is the place for you. Opened at the turn of the century the museum has been turning heads ever since with it’s controversial and provocative works of art. This is a great time to visit the gallery as it has just opened an extension which offers 60% more exhibition space according to the Tate Modern official site. The gallery is also home to works from some of the world’s best artists including the modern master Pablo Picasso.
Shop at Harrods
Harrods epitomizes everything great about Britain. The seven floors are filled with the best and most luxurious brands the country has to offer as well as famous international brands. In the run up to Christmas, Harrods is the perfect place to buy a gift or perhaps the famous Christmas hamper. Alongside the clothing brands Harrods is famous for its large food hall, which specializes in fine food and drink. Offering the best produce from around the world visitors can experience a culinary journey like no other.
See a performance at The West End
London has a rich cultural heritage of theater from Shakespeare to the modern musicals. Alongside Broadway, The West End is seen as one of the top places in the world to experience a live performance from the best actors in the business. Every year there are new plays and old classics put on. Visit London has a list of the top musicals playing over the autumn and winter period including classics such as Les Misérable and The Phantom of the Opera.
