My End-of-Year Travel Plans Revealed

Sunset in Ulcinj, Montenegro

This year has been a strange one for me in terms of travel plans, and it’s not about to get any less strange over the next few months.  Shocking, I know!

I started the year off in Colombia, then made my way back to Washington state to spend time with my family.  I played for a few days in New York City, got the most out of a layover in London, and touched down in mainland Europe for the very first time in Barcelona.  I ended up in Greece during their financial meltdown (and it was lovely as ever) and have been working my way north through the Balkans ever since.

To recap: That’s 3 continents and 9 countries in just 7 months.Where I've traveled in 2015

WHAT?!

It’s been a lot, even for me.  I didn’t envision my first trip to Europe unfolding this way, but it did, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

From an outsider’s perspective, it might seem like all of this travel has happened smoothly and seamlessly, but I’ll let you in on a little secret–landing in Greece was about as far as my planning had gone.  In other words, since the day I left that olive oasis behind nearly six weeks ago, I’ve pretty much just been going wherever the wind has blown me.  Normally, I get a little stressed out in circumstances like this, when I don’t so much as know where I’ll be sleeping the following night.  But this time around, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve actually enjoyed every minute of it.

Ulcinj, Montenegro

It’s almost as if I’m a freewheeling backpacker again–at least, in the sense that I have absolutely zero commitments and can stay in each place for as long or as little as I please.  I can change my plans at the last minute, or I can join other travelers on their route if I so choose.

But something began gnawing at me not too long ago–this feeling that maybe, just maaayyybe, I should take control of my future a little bit and make some calculated decisions that will keep me moving in the direction of my goals.

The goals I’m talking about specifically?  Continuing my journey toward blogging superstardom (heh, heh), seeing my family more often and nurturing the relationships that are most important to me, and building a lifestyle of sustainable location independence through freelance work and income from this blog.

And funnily enough, one solution came to me that could help me with all of my goals simultaneously.Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

My return to Thailand

That’s right, after two and a half years, I’m finally heading back to the Land of Smiles, and I couldn’t be more excited!

The reasons are threefold, and as I mentioned, they align pretty snugly with the goals I outlined above.  For one, the next TBEX Conference will be held in Bangkok from October 15th-17th.  You may recall I attended my first such travel blogging conference just a few months ago in Costa Brava, Spain.  Well, it turned out to be an incredible experience that has done wonders for my blogging career, so keeping the momentum going by attending the next only felt natural.  Not to mention a whole new slew of bloggers will be in attendance this time around, including my very good friend and mentor (and conference speaker!) Alex. How could I possibly turn that down?

The second reason has a bit to do with the sentiment I expressed last month about yearning for a sense of community.  Now, I know a community won’t materialize overnight, which is why I thought my next best option might be to go spend some time with a friend who has been (and always will be) a part of my worldwide community, through high school, through our move to Thailand, and through years of international travel–my dive instructor BFF, Addy.  There’s something so calming about the idea of spending time with someone who knows me so well, and I can’t wait for our long-overdue reunion.  She’s based in Koh Tao (the same island Alex calls home-away-from-home), which is a place I only got to see briefly (like, two days brief) over New Year’s Eve of 2013.  I’m looking forward to getting to know the island better with the help of friends who know it like the back of their freakishly similar-looking hands.Koh Tao, Thailand

Last but certainly not least, being in Southeast Asia puts me in a good position to meet up with my family over one holiday or another on the island of Maui.  Not only do we have a family-owned condo in Kihei that I haven’t visited since I was fifteen years old, but my mom has been toying with the idea of leaving behind Washington in favor of balmy Hawaii, so looking at rental properties would be an important part of the itinerary (between fresh pineapple breakfasts and afternoon mai tais, anyway).

But coming back to present day, I’m still in the Balkans, so here’s what I’ve got set in stone so far moving forward (Hawaii plans still pending):

  • Novi Sad, Serbia (Aug 3-6)

  • Vršac, Serbia (Aug 6-10)

  • Budapest, Hungary (Aug 10-14)

  • Kraków, Poland (Aug 14-?)

  • Warsaw, Poland (Aug ?-Sept 1)

  • Stockholm, Sweden (Sept 1-8)

  • Bangkok, Thailand (Sept 8-10)

  • Koh Tao, Thailand (Sept 10-?)

With the exception of Kraków and Warsaw, the dates I’ll be in each of these places are pretty much fixed due to reservations of one kind or another.  And I’ll be in Thailand on a 90-day visa, so the latest I’d have to leave the country would be early December.  I may travel around within the country to see friends in Chiang Mai or visit islands I’ve not yet explored, but I’m sure those details will work themselves out in due time.

If any of you will be traveling through these destinations at the same time as me, please let me know!

After Thailand is where things start to get fuzzy; if Hawaii actually does pan out, I may wind up back in Thailand to finish out the year, or I may end up somewhere else entirely.  As ever, I can’t be 100% sure.  But the appeal of Thailand (besides the beaches, having friends that live there, incredible spicy food, warm weather, amazing diving, need I go on??) as I continue to grow my freelance career is that it would allow me to live quite comfortably until it proves more fruitful.  Not that I haven’t made exciting progress over the last couple of months, but I definitely still have a long way to go.

I hope you’ll come along for the ride as I discover lots of new places this summer and return to an old favorite.  It’ll be interesting to see Thailand with fresh eyes this time around having changed in so many ways since arriving in my expat infancy back in 2011; I’m sure Thailand will be quite different from what I remember as well.

If you guys want to keep up with my adventures in raw, unedited real time, I’m finally getting my feet wet with Snapchat lately and would love for you to follow along (@lamochilera).  I can’t promise anything super amazing in the beginning (I’m still a little camera shy) but as time goes on I hope to make them entertaining and maybe even informative at times!  But mostly entertaining.

What are your summer travel plans?  Any tips for the places I’m going?  Leave me all your best suggestions in the comments!

Ha yeah it has been a sort of odd route but really really fun! I’ve loved all of the places I’ve seen so far. Definitely need to come back to Europe soon 🙂

Thank you, Michele! Added you on Snapchat, looking forward to following 🙂

Super exciting! So glad you’re going back to Thailand. Can’t wait to hear about it, but first I’m also really pumped to read about Budapest (it’s definitely on my list). After a couple months in South America, I’m hoping to head to SEA in January, so maybe see you there if you’re still around! And I’ll be sure to follow you on Snapchat (I’m @rsass) – I love watching others but I always forget to update my story… and I’m not big on the selfie game either.

Can’t wait to see your snaps! I’m pretty happy about the decision to go back to Thailand, but at the same time I know I’m not going to be ready to leave Europe. Keep me posted on your plans! Would be awesome to see you in SEA 🙂

Great itinerary Leah – and what fabulous travels you’ve done. I always enjoy reading your blog and seeing the beautiful pictures.
I definitely want to come visit you this time when you’re in Thailand!

    • Leah Davis (author)

Please do come visit, Aunt Crystal! And bring my stubborn mother with you! 😉

Will do! I am with her right now and we’re talking!

I found this post particularly well-written and engaging. I’m excited for your in re: to your upcoming plans, and wish you the best on your quest to blog superstardom.

My summer plans consist of working in New York and studying for the LSAT, but I have a return to Thailand of my own on the docket….mid-January – ??? If you return to SE Asia after some time in Hawaii, let me know!

Also, I recently found myself in a position where I was looking at meeting my family in Hawaii by way of somewhere in SE Asia. I found flights to be frustratingly expensive from just about everywhere, but the least expensive I found were via Manila. Hopefully you’ll have an easier time. My plans changed and I ended up flying from Seattle to Honolulu, on a flight that was half as expensive as any I found from E/SE Asia…

    • Leah Davis (author)

Wow, so many people are heading to SE Asia in the winter! If I’m still there in Jan I will definitely let you know. Thanks for the heads up about Manila. I hadn’t done much research from any airports other than Bangkok yet so I will have to poke around some more to see where the deals are. Wouldn’t mind flying somewhere else first (especially somewhere I haven’t been yet, like the Philippines)…but I also don’t know yet if it’ll be a round-trip flight or not. Sheesh!

These are such exciting plans! I’ve really been wanting to revisit Southeast Asia lately – every time I read a blog post about it (especially if it’s food related) I cry a little inside – so I will be living vicariously through you. I was just in Budapest and absolutely loved it – it’s such a cool city! And Krakow and Warsaw are high on my travel wish list, so I can’t wait to hear about them. PS, I love the term ‘olive oasis’, ha!

Oh man, of all the things I’m excited about re: my return to SE Asia the FOOD is definitely at the top of my list. The first thing I’m gonna do when I land is get some cheap ass street pad thai and a Singha and sit in front of the 7-11 on Khao San Rd people watching. I can’t wait!! Very much looking forward to Budapest and Poland too 🙂

Will be in Krakow on the 14th…. my old hometown so drop me a line if you want to go drinking with some local friends!

    • Leah Davis (author)

Oh yay, that’s awesome! I definitely want to do that! Will keep you posted 🙂

  • Brenna

Hey Leah! We met briefly at TBEX in Spain. I’m not going to make it to TBEX Bangkok, but will most likely be in Thailand at the end of November. I don’t have much time, but I plan on spending most of it in Koh Tao and Chiang Mai, two places I love very much. Anyway, just wanted to say hi! If we’re in the same place at the same time we should grab a beer.

Hi Brenna! That’s a shame you won’t be at the next TBEX but at least you’ll be in Thailand anyway! I lived in CM a few years back and so am hoping to spend some time there as well, so it looks like we’ll most likely overlap somewhere! Keep me posted on your travel dates and if I’m still there I’d love to grab a beer 🙂

Deciding to return to Thailand must feel SO GOOD. My working holiday visa here in Australia runs until the end of January, and after that, I’m centering all of my travel plans on the same goal. I couldn’t be more excited about everything I have coming up in Australia, but there’s something about getting back to Thailand I can hardly wait for. Congrats on the big decision 🙂 …and in the meantime, can’t wait to follow the rest of your travels in Europe!

You know, it does feel really amazing. Although I never had (and still don’t have) intentions of settling in Thailand long-term, something about it feels a lot like coming home. If I still happen to be there when you arrive please get in touch! Enjoy the rest of your time in Aus, and I’ll do the same here in Europe 🙂

  • Justine

Yay, TBEX! I had an inkling you were going to go for round two in Bangkok! See you there 🙂 And if you happen to make it up to Cambodia you definitely have a travel partner in crime. I’m so excited for your plans!

If the conference were happening anywhere in Asia other than Thailand, I probably wouldn’t be going, but the fact that I’ll get to see so many of my old friends and the places I love so much really sold me on the idea. Can’t wait to finally meet you in person after all this time!! You’ll be the first person I hit up if/when I come to Cambodia 🙂

  • Carole

Hello. I am going to be in Budapest when you are there. We, my husband and two friends arrive on Tuesday 11th until Friday 14th. We are of your parents generation but there is a connection. Addy is my son Gordon’s girlfriend. He lives on Koh Tao. We live near Edinburgh, Scotland. We could meet up if you have time. Contact me via Facebook. I am Carole MacBride and have a photo of me diving and a Koh Tao sunset on my FB page

Hi Carole! I would love to meet up in Budapest 🙂 I will send you a FB message now!

I got here from your Instagram, and I’m glad I did because it’s nice when a travel blogger sounds like a real person! this post is very honest and I hope everything goes well for you (Aka reaching travel blogging stardom). I’m also going to southeastasia (Thailand,Cambodia and Vietnam) so maybe we will run into each other haha.

    • Leah Davis (author)

Hey, I’m so glad you stopped by! Even happier that I sound like a real person, haha. Thanks so much for the encouragement, and if we’ll be in SEA around the same time I’d love to meet up! Cheers!

  • Edwina

Ugh, everybody is going to TBEX, I’m having major FOMO!
It sounds like you’re having an awesome year though. If you’re still in Thailand by New Year’s, let’s meet up! Planning on being there early Jan.

EDWINA! Come to TBEX, woman! I was starting to feel like I’d be missing out too which is a big part of why I finally pulled the trigger and bought a plane ticket! Anyway, let me know when you’re planning to be in Thailand, I’d love to meet up 🙂

Making plans is so exciting! I’m a bit jealous! I haven’t been able to travel much because my research got a little stuck so I had to buckle down for a few months, but I’m hoping to make some plans for the rest of this year and next year! I really really want to go to TBEX at some point. Agh! Why can’t everything fall into place?? I’m hoping to go to Thailand at some point in the next year because some of my research is based there, but I have no idea when that would be.

It all sounds great Leah! I am kind of tempted to head over to Bangkok for Tbex! But we just moved away from Asia so I probably won’t this time. I know there is one in Florida but that seems like more hard work transport wise than going to Bangkok- do they even have a skytrain in FT Lauderdale?-I doubt it! 🙂

i am so so excited for you!!! 🙂 I’ve been wanting to attend a blogger conference, but I haven’t really done much research.. mainly because I”m shy and I hate socializing! haha I know what you mean about community. It’s so hard when you’re constantly on the move. We haven’t even been hopping around as much as you, but it’s still so difficult to get that same sense of community as others who are staying in one place and growing roots. I do appreciate the blogger community, though, and need to get plugged in even more!
